Welton Barnett
Welton Barnett
This is a recording of Welton Barnett who played with Red Wolfe’s Port of Dixie Jazz Band. This recording was done in 1984, but the picture was shot in early 1980’s I believe. It was shot at Dick Henningers Lower Levee Lounge, in downtown St Paul. I don’t know of any other recordings of him but what a great man. A true giant in traditional jazz. I know Red loved working with him and everyone that new him loved him. Enjoy the tune.

Jeanne Arland Peterson live on WCCO approximately 1951with Dick Link
This is a clip from the library of Billy Peterson. There are a number of clips I will add here and you will be able to get them later from Jeanne Arland Peterson’s web site later this year. There are too many good memories here not to mention. The time of recording shows were a little different then they are today with spontaneity being a key to the success of the performances which were all live. In this clip there are some great bantering between Jeanne, Willy Peterson, and Dick Link? I particularly love the Jello commercial at the end of this clip. It is a short one only about 1:29 seconds. I hope you enjoy.
Again, this is a copy of Jeanne, Willy, and Tony Grise’ live on CCO’ Radio from the Peterson collection compliments of Billy Peterson. I remember that my dad often talked about Tony Grise’ and that through WCCO, Jeanne, Willy And Tony were household names. Even though the radio band was AM, the sound is incredible. In many areas we have improved through technology, in this area, the ‘magic’ of radio is evident and hopefully will never become lost or overlooked. Jeanne Arland Peterson, Willy Peterson, and Tony Grise’ live on WCCO Radio
Although the picture does not match the recording, I am using it for filler until I can get a Picture of Jim McGovern, as it was his band. I am still looking for an excerpt of Jim as he described the recording session. It is priceless and it typify’s the intensity of the times as to the commitment of the musicians to there own works of art. This is a perfect example of the importance of our understanding of the First Set. Again the picture shown is not accurate, the real players on this piece were Jim McGovern, Tom McGovern, Ed Tolck, Dick Norling. Loren Helberg, and Doc Van Deusen
This is a one hour radio show, sit back and enjoy the nostalgia
Again, part of the Peterson collection, compliments of Billy Peterson. This is a one hour show of WCCO and Jeanne Peterson, Willy Peterson, Tony Grise’, Cedric Adams, Clellan Card and Dick Link, and pictured below, Biddy Bastien. The Twin Cities were known for some of the best musicians in the country, as they are still, and many of the top players in the country, felt that this area was the best kept secret of jazz and few gave up the chance to play here. Minnesota friendly I believe began on the bandstand
